Sunlight is the key. moss doesn't grow in the presence of direct sunlight. You need to get into the canopy of the tree and "punch-out" some holes to get light on the trunk. this will serve two purposes. Iwill keep the moss down and also heats the sap inside the trunk and makes it easier for the tree to move the sap.
