There are about 160 to over 200 depending upon who you ask. If you go to http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/breedinformation/ you will see that dog breeds are broken down into groups and there are 7 groups in all. West Minister acknowledges about 160 breeds. Hope that helps you.
