I have a hummingbird feeder that ran out of solution. I don't have the store bought feed anymore. I know you can boil sugar and water together to make more, but I can't remember the correct ratio? Is it 1 part sugar to 1 part water, or 1 part sugar to 2 parts water?

correct ratio is four parts water to one part sugar, I usually make mine a little stronger, no need to add red food coloring the hummers are attracted to the feeder by the color of the feeder. Making your own is cheaper than buying the mix....good luck with your hummers, they are few and far betweed here in Tennessee this year.

4 parts water and 1 part sugar. I put 1 cup of water in the microwave and dissolve the sugar in it. Then mix the rest of the water in a water container. Make sure the feeders are clean. They say that the feeders should be changed every 3 or 4 days, but I've been feeding them for years and only change them, if they get to low or get dirty looking. I have at least 2 humming birds, every year. I live in NJ. Good luck!

I saw on home gardening show P. Allen Smith that humming bird feeders need to be changed every 3-4 days as the feed goes bad and cause the birds to get sick and allthough you may get other humming birds to visit the ones that got sick will remember the experince and avoid comming back around.

for parts water to one part sugar is correct, I just want to add that for those who may add red food coloring....It is not necessary and make actually harm the birds. There is no definitive proof that it is harmful, but why chance it?
