I am not extremely religious, but wouldn't Jesus dying on the cross for humanities sin count? Sounds pretty selfless to me.

In recent history I would say the act of a mother giving birth. She
knows that it may be dangerous to her and she is committing herself for 18 years of work raising you , sometimes a lot longer

The obvious answer is Jesus, but another good one would be Joan of Arc...you don't see too many 13-year-old girls in our society today who (a) is intelligent enough to lead a revolution, and (b) brave enough to be sacrificed for their beliefs.
