Need more information from ya. You put XP on what used to be a 98 PC? Most likely you need to update the driver. XP usually does that automatically, but if not, go to the manufacturers web site of your computer, motherboard, or audio card and look for an audio driver.

Hi,

As per the lack of details this is what advice I have for you.

In case you have upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP directly, then the driver might not have got installed properly. This happens sometimes.

Try this:
In Windows XP, Click Start and right click on the My Computer Icon and choose Properties. On the New Window, go to the Hardware Tab, click on the Device Manager Button. This should open the Device Manager. If this all was complex, then you can also open the Device Manager by Clicking Start -> Clicking Run and type devmgmt.msc. This shoudl also open the Device Manager.

Now in the Device Manager Window, look for the entry called "Sound, video and game controllers". If your cound card is listed without any exclamation mark, then you can try the next step or else you should reinstall the driver for your sound card. Also, if you cannot find your sound card under this category (which is quite possible), then you can also look for "other drvices" category and that other device could be your sound card. Your system could not recognize it because it does not have Windows XP compatible drivers for your sound card.

Next step would be checking the sound properties. Click Start -> Run and type "Sndvol32" (without quotes). Now, check if any item is muted or not. If any item is muted (except mic), then unmute it.

All the best.

Cheers,
Manish

You more then likely need to reinstall your sound driver, and depending on if your computer has integrated sound or a individual card you need to get those drivers from the manufacturers website, or disc.

ok have you tried getting the newest drivers for your sound card ? go to the manufacturers site if it is sound blaster that would be creative.com then go to download drivers. also simple thing that is overlooked is double click on the sound speaker symbol by clock and look at the window that opens to see if mute is clicked on anything.
