The kidneys do 2 things:
1) they keep the salt content of the blood constant
2) and they filter waste out of the bloodstream.
The main components of urine is salt water and waste blood borne products.
The major blood borne products from cells in the body is ammonia, and the major waste product from blood is bilirubin (the same stuff that causes jaundice in newborns).
The liver, converts each into a less hazardous form: ammonia is converted to urea, and bilirubin is degraded to urobilins.
Salt, water, and urea are all colorless, but urobilins are yellow. Thus your pee is normally a pale yellow...
If you drink a lot, your urine will be more dilute and clearer, and if you get dehydrated, your urine will contain less water and be darker yellow.

The color of pee is caused by bile, a chemical the liver produces to break up fat. When our bodies break down bile, the pigment urochrome turns pee yellow. The lighter the color, the more liquid has watered it down.
In fact, you can easily determine if you're dehydrated from the color of your urine. Dark yellow is a symptom of moderate dehydration and is a sign that you should drink fluids right away. However, taking vitamin supplements can also cause pee to appear yellow.
Believe it or not, urine's yellow color was once believed to come from gold. Long ago, alchemists attempted to extract gold from pee. Needless to say, they were unsuccessful. However, in 1669, an alchemist named Hennig Brand discovered phosphorus while engaged in the undertaking. Among other things, this find helped to spark the creation of matches.
You may have asked this question lightheartedly, but for hikers and parents of small children, understanding the significance is important for health and safety.

Healthy urine is a clear aqueous solution, varying in colour from dark yellow to colourless. The main constituent besides water is urea, which gives it its colour. Urea is one of the three nitrogenous waste products. The other two are creatinine and uric acid. Urine also contains various inorganic ions.

Because it is filtered by the body and the color does vary by intake of liquid and food. yesllow is the most common color, however there are many other shades of yellow that is can come in. Mainly though because of the filtrations and toxicity.

urine is the body's excretion.....i.e. the body's by-product from metabolism. this by-product consists of mainly extra salts, such as ammonia, as well as the broken down remnants of acids from the food we eat. all these come together to give rise to the yellowish tinge in urine....as all are toxic to our body in high concentrations. the more dehydrated a person is, the yellower the urine.

Because of the impurities it contains. If you drink enough WATER, not sodas, kool-aid, or the like, it will lighten to almost clear as the impurities are flushed out.

Because of the visible light spectrum. When light shines on your pee it reflects the color yellow.

The same reason grass is green and the sky is blue. It's just the way light reflects off of it.
