Would there be an icon showing that I use messenger?

there will be an icon showing that u downloaded it, near the clock, in the bottom right corner of the screen...u can set it up so it doesn't save your login info (username and password) so other people can't log in as you, and see your buddylist.

There's multiple facets to your question.
Firstly, you need to disable msn messenger from starting everytime you start windows. that way, the icon won't appear in your lower right corner every start. Feel free to play with the features.
Secondly, the person won't know if you log out, because that person would have to log back in. If he/she does not know your password, you're safe.
Thirdly, make sure that you don't save log files of you conversation. If you saved them, they should be in a folder in the msn messenger folder. DELETE THEM.

Only if they have your pass word, other wise they can not access your account.
I have 2 kids and along with myself we all have msn accounts we can't access each others account with out the passwords.
Keep your password to yourself and you shouldn't have any worries.
Now if you're a child (under 18), who has plans to talk to some guy some where far away don't. Watch who you talk to and who you give your id to. There are people who lie about who they are just to get their hands on you.

first people will be able to login to your messenger only if you have it save your login and password. second, yes there will be an icon that appears on the desktop and on the bottom right hand side next to the time on the bottom bar (non-mac computers) but you can take both of them off if you want

only if you say save conver or messages on this computer. Or if they have a net-nanny or similar type of program that saves every key stroke on the puter then it wont matter. Will it? But just right click on icon and go into properties and then choose settings and set to what you want.. unclick any that you dont want used... thats all

Yeah, sailorliones has the right answer. No one can see who you are talking to without a username and pass. The only other then that is the conversation logs which you can delete, or disable so they are no longer generated and you should be fine.
