For me working in civil engineering is great because you get to be in the field (where it really happens) as well as being involved in the pre-building process such as planning and calculating. While building one needs to monitor project costs, look after the planning and use your organizational skills to get the job done. Hence a variety of activities!
Working at a engineering agency is cool but working at a contractor is most interesting i think because you are on top of the project. From day one you say changes in the project you're involved with and you helped buidling it!
Once in a while DiscoveryChannel has these interesting shows about the people behind big projects and their worries, see it if you get the chance!

I'm not a civil engineer, but I am a structural engineering student who currently is working in a structural engineering internship.
So far, it's alot like homework. I'm really suprised how much I use the basics we learned in school like moment and shear diagrams. There is not nearly as much on-site work as you might expect (but then I'm working in consulting and not as a field engineer). I find it pretty rewarding tho to have a final design and see it for real, however there is alot of responsiblity to ensure that there are no failures because they can be life threatening to the people on/ in the structure. Also, it is benefical to get your 'engineering license' so make sure you look into the work involved with that (FE exam, office experience, PE exam) before committing to the career.
