A company called Nielsen puts boxes in the TVs of volunteers. They then generalize from those viewers to the population.

For instance, if they determine that 20% of all Nielsen families watched CSI during a certain time period, they assume that 20% of ALL television viewers were watching CSI during that period.

Arbitron is a survey system used in the broadcast industry. Radio and Television stations rely on Arbitron to collect the information. Arbitron sends out "diaries" to the consumers which are filled out in survey form and returned for tabulations.

well the truth is they can't find out for sure so they do an estimate. there is a company that i forgot theyre name but i will update if i remenber that has volunteers fill out a log of everything they are watching or they put a chip in their computer and monitor what they watch. so lets say they do this with 500 tv sets they take the total of tv sets watching a show, find the percentage and take the percentage of tvs available in the us or whatever area theyre mesuaring. hope this helps
