I'd agree that "dump" is probably too strong of a word for The Tropicana, however there is absolutely no way that it can compare to the newer hotels like NYNY mentioned in your question. The rooms are smaller, darker, and older (from furnishings to fixtures) and the so-called "garden" rooms out back are a leftover from when the hotel first opened in 1957.

The rest of the hotel is similarly out of date and out of step with the current Las Vegas zeitgeist - low ceilings, crowded aisles, not as many of the current slot machines, etc.

The good news is that you can save yourself some money as you have found out. And if your idea of a Vegas vacation is to check in, throw your bags in the corner, stay out all night until 5am then crash for a few hours and do it again then it makes much more sense to stay at a place like the Trop. It may not be the fanciest hotel in the world but the rooms are clean and comfortable and safe.

By the way, yes, the Tropicana was sold recently as a part of its parent company Aztar Corp, which went to the Columbia-Sussex company. They have not said what they intend to do with the property yet but it will probably get some minor cosmetic upgrades over the next year or two and then be torn down to make way for a new hotel/casino.

Most of the big hotels on the strip have been torn down and rebuilt, or they are brand new. The Trop has been sitting there "as is" for about 20 years while all the others improved. It has a dumpy old style casino and is not very inviting. It is one of only about 3 of the old, old hotels that have not been updated, like the Frontier and the Stardust and the Rivera.

It's an older hotel. But it's in a great spot because it's right across the street from NY NY and the MGM.
And I disagree that just because it's older it's a dump. They have a great pool and have one of the longest running and successful shows on the strip Follies Bergere. It's the old style showgirl show and it's great. I never worked there or anything but it's part of old Vegas and I just wanted to defend it!

I think the Tropicana is in the process of being sold and might end up being torn down and replaced. And, as others mentioned, it's older and not as elaborate as others nearby. But it's got a great location and you're going to spend a lot of time wandering around anyway, so take advantage of the price so you have more to spend!

The Tropicana is one of the oldest casinos on the Vegas strip. It doesn't have the amenities or shopping malls (Bellagio) that the other casinos do, so they don't have to spend as much on upkeep or overhead.

Because it's older....and older people stay there...or families. It's not hip and trendy like the 3 other hotels at that intersection.
