Grey is the British/Canadian spelling, gray is the American spelling.

Like humour and humor.

Gray is American spelling, all other English speaking countries use Grey

That is so weird that you ask that, I was thinking about that last night as i was trying to fall asleep. i always thought "Grey" was the british spelling and "gray" is the american spelling. I could be wrong though. perhaps i should go look it up.

i think grey is for color while gray is for description

just different people spell it differently..no reason really...it all means the same thing.
