Considering England's past two matches, I believe a team like Trinidad & Tobago should totally get the same wages. But they don't. Are our footballers overpaid?

i know i'll take a bashing from the english football fans here but here goes anyways... in retrospect to most english footballers, they do make too much money! technically-that is skillwise-they're english players are far inferior to say, spanish, argentine, brazilian, dutch, czech or-oh my god! even french players. take david beckham for example... the man is above-average at best... he's not great goalscorer like ronaldinho, doesn't possess riquelme's vision, figo's footwork, nedved's playmaking penchant nor landon donovan's speed. we're never going to compare him to zidane for a myriad of reasons-most of which have to deal with ability. he doesn't even play any real defence. all of these downgraded abilities and yet, only ronaldinho makes more money than he does. why? because of looks...! (chuckles...) then there're are individuals such as jermaine defoe whom i can never recall ever starting a match for team england-and rightfully so-yet he makes millions. onward, we have the goalkeeper, robinson who would not start for my national team, romania if he were selectable by the head coach, victor piturca. i cannot remember sol cambell, joe cole or shaun wright-phillips haven't really made serious impressions on me. ofcourse, there are exceptions... rooney is a boatload of talent, sheringham continues to be a warrior and steven gerrard is by far, the best midfielder england have now... he even scored today, versus trinidad and tobago. then there are players such as crouch and, possibly the best england has to offer, michael owen. this brings us to a serious question: why don't these players make anywhere nearly as much as beckham-i mean, i really understand ronaldinho's income-he deserves every penny and more. what is depressing to me is that beckham isn't even the best midfielder on his national team let alone in europe, with the likes of rosicky, nedved, figo, ballack, antonio reyes and so forth-or the world with riquelme, donovan, ronalaldinho, robinho as well as julio baptista getting the nod from me over beckham-and i watch and follow loads of football-you would think i really didn't have a social life if you all would know how much football i follow. therfore, i know what i am arguing about! although footballers do not make anywhere near the kind of money that nba basketball players or pga tour professional golfers make on a yearly basis, some are grossly overpaid-especially in england. to compare the earnings parity among the different sports: as much money as ronaldinho and beckham make-both in the vicinty of $25 million- kevin garnett of the nba makes $28 million per year in salary alone-not including very lucrative endorsements. shaquille o'neal makes more than $30 million a year in salary alone. let's not even discuss kobe bryant. the single most boring sport you can ever wacth on telivision, golf, brings tiger woods more than $60 million a year in total. phil mickelson more than $25 million. therfore, in comparison, footballers' pay, anywhere in the world i'm afraid, pale in comparison to athletic earnings from your brothers in arms from acroos the atlantic-and i do not mean canada!!! footballers face much more pressure to perform well than athletes here in the united states and then there're all the politics involved-such as when say, germany suit up against poland or ireland republic play england. everyone on both side play their hearts out when turkey face greece and serbia face either bosnia-herzigovina or croatia. we, as romanians, lose our minds when we play hungary. this unique to only football, and adds alot of pressure. when you really think about it, eleven or so men can cause the utmost national pride or adversely depress millions, in seconds. football is the only sport consistently used as political propaganda-remember el salvador-honduras? the match only pushed things over the edge and gave both nations' leaders an excuse for war. more recently, you've had north korea and united states in the womens' world cup and iran again, with the latter in the 1998 mens' world cup used either as positive, or somewhat negative political propaganda. the truth is, that sometimes, the more deserving of individuals from all walks of life aren't as well recognized as the more, "attractive" options. therfore, in some respects, many footballers are overpaid out of lack of sufficient talent-but football overall, in its uniform, simple ways-and by far the most appealing sport from all angles, is grossly underappreciated. at least the ones really doing the footballing...

football from grassroots never paid a child to play. they play because they enjoy. most professional footballers enjoy the game with almost the same enthusiasm, but since money has been going up & up, they feel they are now deservant of what money they get paid. i am not bothered to say that all footballers should be paid the same... they just get paid too much, as if to say they deserve more than somebody who actively helps communities and charities putting in all the hours whilst a player just plays and can earn at least 8 times the standard persons wage. it is not right and it is not deserved

Yes, although I think much of the entertainment industry gets over paid look at Jonathan Ross just been given an 18 million pound contract to turn up to work a few hours a week as he doesn't have to train that puts the footballers somewhat in the shadows.

Hell yes! For what, kicking a ball around?

What about the people who really help this country and what they do i.e. the police, amblulance drivers, nurses, doctors and firefighters etc?

My father is a firefighter, and he goes out everyday risking his own life to save others, and he gets paid peanuts!

I understand that there is a lot of money in football which is generated by the fans, stocks and shares, and advertisment, but come on people! Surely the money should be channeled elsewhere to people and sectors who really deserve it/need it?

i think footballers get paied way to much money because all they do is run around a pitch for 90mins (or however long a game is) and get paied millions. i mean come on what are they acctually doing to help anyone or anything? nothing all they do is make they're countrys feel "specail" i mean nurses, police etc should get paied more because they're acctually helping people!!

rant over.

No. If you look at what they are paid vs. the average time in the league (about three years) and the toll that the game takes on their bodies....for the most part, I don't believe they are overpaid. Have you seen videos of older players...they are broken bodies with some almost unable to walk.

Supply and demand. If you are the best at your trade, it is fair to be paid the most that you are able to get.

Personnally, I don't know about that! The MLS here in the USA has a salary cap, but most European Soccer leagues don't have one. Which means the answer can vary by what country or league you're playing in.

No, elite means elite. How many people can do what they do? Not many, so there's not much supply. There is a market for the talent, so there's a large demand. Follow the law of supply and demand, and there you are, lots of cash! :)
