While I agree with euthanasia in Principle, people have a right to end their own life especialy if they are suffering and in great pain. The idea of sanctity of life, as an atheist I find pointless but I also find offensive, it undermines free will and I don't really like being told that a person doesn't even have the right to kill themselves because God, who dained to allow them to suffer from a crippling illness can't let them die, and the argument that suffering gives faith is lets face it, a last attempt to justify something which is unjustifiable.
So as I have said, I am for euthanasia in principle however of course, us being humans and the world being as it is were, euthanasia to be legalised it would create a whole load of problems which no one has the asnwers to. First of all even if it was carefully regulated there is still no way to protect from abuse, either ending in murder or in social pressure put on people to just die instead of causing their families pain and time in looking after them, feeling driven to euthanasia, both these things are blatantly wrong. Also it is clear that if you legalise euthanasia you do make human life less valuable and open the door to other abuses, for example euthanasia without permision, euthanasia of people society judges as simply unfit to live, if human life is a burden then why value it so much?
These issues do make euthanasia such a contriversial debate and its not like I've got any answers, while you could say look at Holland, has anything so atrociaous happened in Holland but then again you could refer to Nazi Germany, was neccessary euthanasia just a step building up to the holocaust?
I supose it comes down to chances but do recognise thats not an answer at all.u asked for an opinion.

I am all for it. If I was suffering from a terminal disease, I would certainly want to be allowed the dignity of dying as and when I chose. I know lots of people (mainly religious zealots and politicians who needs to put out a ‘good’ public image) are clamouring about how if it is made legal then people will be killed by doctors left right and centre, but if you set up precautions then that wouldn’t happen. For example, the person needs to fully understand what is happening to them and to give their full consent.

People suffering from a degenerative brain disease, for example, might not be aware enough to actually understand. It must be the individual’s choice alone- a family member cannot request it. Also, various medical check points would aid this process, for example, after all possible treatment has failed and it’s been agreed that the person will die, and having two or more doctors sign off on this before allowing anything to take place.

The only reason this hasn’t been legalised in this country is due to religion. In the end, this is down to choice, and we are still being denied this choice!

I think you can get to a point where euthanasia is the right thing. I have had to put 2 dogs down. I saw the pain they were in, there was no quality in their life.
The medication did not work.

I hope, if I end up like this, someone will do the same for me. If I have grandchildren, I don't want their last or only memories to be a sick, dying woman. I would like them to remember something good.

I am all for it in certain situations. Why is it we have little to no problem putting a pet to sleep and allow them the dignity and pain free end of life, yet, we ask our LOVED ones to hold on and keep fighting to live one more day of pain and agony.

If a person is suffering from a terminal illness they should have the right to end their own life. If this diagnosis is confirmed by two independant doctors, than it should be allowed. It should be highly regualted, so as not to be an end all solution. I do think that people suffer needlessly though.

I'm for it. My grandmother was heavily interested in euthanasia when she was diagnosed with bone cancer. She ended up commiting suicide without any warning, ect. I often think that euthanasia would at least given us some warning on her death and give us an opportunity to see her one last time, say goodbye, ect.

This is a big can of worms right there.

Euthanisia opens the door for later on forcing old people to their death because they seem to have outlived their purpose.

The after you've gone down that route, what is to stop you from killing off you see as non-productive in society?

Thats a no-no.

I think it is a personal decision, but personally, if regulated I think it is respectful and kind to the dying person and their family. It is not fair for the family to have to watch and see their loved one die in an undignified, horrible way. It is also not fair on the dying person. It is best to put them out of their misery, I think this is the kindest thing, we as humans can do for the ones we love. We want the best for our pets, I think the family should do what is right for them and their loved one. The family has to live with this decision so it is personal to them.

I understand why people in a dying situation would want this, it is a case of dignity.

but the fact remains that a person has to help a person die and in many ways this is a greater moral issue.
This is seen as murder. UK.

Personally i have never been in a situation to know a person who has wanted this so i can't give you my full view.

Countries? What do they have to do with it?

I'm all for it. Please kill me if I'm on my deathbed and a useless burden on my loved ones. I deserve that much respect and dignity in life and death. I don't understand how people could want to be a burden on their family. Then again I guess I know a lot of people who are useless burdens who aren't even on their deathbed :)

i think people should at least have the choice. if someone is suffering and in severe pain, its it fair to make them end their days in that state? we wouldnt do it to an animal, we would be kind and humane and put it to sleep peacefully. we should have the right to say when enough is enough. we should be allowed to die peacefully and with dignity if we want to. there is enough suffering in the world already.
