Smiling and shut-ing up, playing along makes you just as guilty. Tell him to keep his/her personal opinions OUTSIDE the workplace. You're not there to socialize, you're there to work.

Apparently, you need this job, or else you would have probably already quit. Your boss probably does not know or realize that you are offended by his racist comments. He probably thinks that you're just "one of the good-old boys" that are just like him. This is what I would do, try it or not, just trying to help you out. Next time any comment is made that you do not agree with, don't smile, he might interpret that as encouragement. Instead, either keep a straight face, frown, make a discontented face, or straight up tell him that you don't find it funny. Don't get all defense at him, don't preach to him, that will more than likely make your work-life a living hell. Just simply, and in a matter-of-fact way let him know that you don't appreciate his racist comments and if he asks why or whatever, tell him, I do not agree with what you are saying and/or implying. If he still keeps at it, either become more forceful, tell a superviser about his racist ways, or start looking for a new job. Hope this helps man...hang in there.

I can understand how frustrated you feel but with the type of personality your boss has i feel if you do let him know you may be risking your working relationship as well as your job -- Only thing you may be able to do is just tell him you have a load of work at yr desk and can't stay too long or something like that

If you work at a big company, they should have a policy regarding this and you should talk to your Human Resources Department.
If you work at a smaller company you might have a problem. You might want to try saying that those kind of remarks make you uncomfortable, but he probably doesn't care. Technically, you can't be fired for making that comment. But he might find some other reason.

An employer cannot legally fire an employee because they don't share the same beliefs or opinions on any topics, including racism. If he did in fact fire you because you don't go along with his racist remarks, you could sue him. Yet, even if he doesn't fire you, he could still give you a rough time and so forth. But as far as legally being able to fire you, he can't do that.

Mr. Eduarodi;
Speaking from personal experience-- I happen to be Mulatto myself --the answer to your question is actually another question: Hoy much does this job mean to you? Even if you happened to be one of the richest men in the world, no job, I repeat, NO JOB is as important as the right to a harassment-free work enviroment. There happen to be a vast multitude of resources that are available to people that find themselves in a similar situation: one of them is to see if you can schedule a meeting with your Director of Human Resources, and build from there.
Wishing the best for you and your future;

If he continues to harass with racial comments, he is breaking the law, and after you've told him to refrain, and he doesn't you could take legal action, if you don't want to lose your job, you may contact legal aide, if this happens and ask for advice, but Racism and discrimination are breaking the law when used in a work environment.

Tell him your great-grandmother is whatever it is that he hates....or.....:
Go in to work one day and before any conversation takes place on any subject, whip out a photo of some invented relative who is of the race he hates and say how sad you are that she got run over by a bus or whatever. That might help.
