The idea behind the Taliban was to bring Islam back to the seventh century before the religion became "corrupted" in their mindset. Some of the more extreme laws were that a man must have a shaved head and must grow a beard that extended past his fist when he wrapped his hand around it. Women were considered property and were not allowed to leave their homes without a male escort. They could not work or have access to education. If a woman was suspected of shaming her family (adultry, pre-marital sex, etc.), the family had the right to kill her to restore the family honor. Homosexuals had tall walls built around then the walls were plowed down onto the man. If he survived, then he wasn't really homosexual.

The practice of wearing a burka was not instituted by the Taliban. They adopted it from Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the warlord/prime minister who ruled Afghanistan immediately before the Taliban took over.

This isn't an extensive list in any way. These are just some of the more famous laws.

The laws the Taliban operated under were the Sharia law (see Wikipedia search Sharia).

Most of the above comments are based on lack of knowledge or watching too much CNN or listening to your parents rant and rave and not knowledge of any facts.

The Taliban operated under Sharia law.

Some of the more severe ones were no music, men were forbidden to shave, women forbidden to leave their homes unless accompanied by a male relative. If you want a glimpse at what life was rent the film Osama.

Update: Another one, females weren't allowed to study or work.

Kill the infidels and anyone else that don't go along with them. They use God for their purposes. It is a sin but someday they will all pay for their forked tongues and their murderouse ways

I only thank God I didn't have to live under them. Women had to wear burkahs, and could not attend school. They were men's "property". Not a system I'd want to live under.
