I've been with my 22 year old boyfriend for 4 years but his parents refuse to meet me because I'm American. They say that I'm a "typical selfish, greedy, white girl" even though they have never met me. They have threatened him, saying that if he were to marry me, I would be a disgrace to their family, and they would disown him. Is there anything I can do?

He and his parents are Indian, and they lived in India for a good portion of their lives. The parents had an arraganed marriage, so they don't even think their son should be dating in the first place.

Nothing. My husband of 45 years married me against his family's wishes and to this day I am not favored. But we have lived a wonderful life because he chose me as a wife. Marriage is between two people not two families. It is nice when everyone likes each other. He gave up part of his family because he refused to give me up but to this day, he is glad he chose me and the ones that didn't like me 45 years still don't like me now. If he can survive with the disgrace so be it.

There is nothing you can do. Even if you go and meet them to show them that you are nothing like that they have already made their mind up about it. They may overtime grow to deal with you. But will always have their option of you and the way they feel about white American girls. Keep your head up. How does your boyfriend feel about this? You guys have been together for 4 years so far and he has not let this get between you don't you let it get between you. And to the ignorant person truthteller here is some truth for you anyone can be discriminated against. And even white people hear racist remarks and get treated differently by other races. I went to job corps. where there were only 15 white people and I was called alot of names and treated pretty bad by people when I first got there.

If you try and keep this a secret then I'm telling you based on experience... The truth always comes out in the end. This sounds exactly like my situation 8 years ago I dated a Black guy when I was 16 years old, My dad was very racist and my mom did not believe in interracial couples. I kept this relationship from them for six months and then my cousin told my parents. My dad broke out in a complete rage threw out my cell phone, my computer, he kept me away from my friends for months. It was the worst experience of my life. Whatever you decide goodluck!!

There's nothing you can do to change their minds. All you can do is be polite to them. You need to decide if you want to marry into this family. Loving your boyfriend isn't enough. You will have to deal with his family for the rest of your life. It will cause a lot of stress and can break up a marriage.

There is definitely something you can do. I deal with alot of racist people in my life and from experience the best way to get them to like you for who you are is to tell them how much you love diversity, you can just let your boyfriend talk about it if you don't want to tell them personally. Make sure you talk about how you connect with others souls and not their skin. This way you will be able to act like you don't even know about how racist they are and that your a sweet little American angel!

Clearly, from what you've said, your boyfriend's parents are generalizing you to fit the mold of what they believe all Americans are like. It is unfortunate that they are so short sighted to conceive that all people can be generalized by the acts of a few people that are members in that group. They may be unreachable because of their prejudicial views, however, because they're generalizing you, showing your individual character which is nothing like their "selfish, greed, whiy girl" character may assist them in seeing you are not like that.

I would let that be a sign that there will be problems in the future. If you dont have their blessings than just accept that and let him know that that is reason enough to wait or move on! Because when the road gets bumpy and believe me it will that will be the first thing that he thinks.

Pray!!!!! This society is too racist and that is not fair to people. If there is a chance that you could make dinner for them and lure them in with food that is always a great start. then they can see what a great person you are.

Let them be the way they are. All you should care about is the person that you love and care about. They cannot do anything to end your relationship with your partner and people like that are very unregenerate and egocentric.
