The compass points to North of the globe because it is acting as a South Pole and as we know that opposite poles attract.

So if you keep any magnetic material (example anything which has speaker), the compass would come under the magnetic influence of the magnet and would thus either get damaged or not work properly untill the artificial magnetic source is removed.
