No good surfing in Melbourne, I'm afraid, better off heading to Geelong and Torquay for that. Shop, shop & shop. Melbourne is a very fashionable city and has great shopping in the city and also Chapel St. Definitely catch an AFL (Australian football) game, even if you are not into football, the crowds and the atmosphere are electric, particularly if it is a Collingwood game.

The Aquarium & Zoo are good as well as the Fitzroy gardens. The Corner Hotel in Richmond has great live rock/punk acts and there are heaps of great clubs to rock the night away. Head over to St. Kilda beach and also check out "The Espy" a very famous nitespot.

Out of Melbourne you can go to Ballarat (about 1 hour drive) and go to Sovereign Hill, a gold-rush themed park. A great fun day out!

Super shopping here in Melbourne!

Go for a day trip down the Great Ocean Road.

Go to an AFL game at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground).

Go to Lygon St in Carlton for wonderful Italian cuisine.

Melbourne has the largest population of Greek people outside of Athens so maybe visit the Greek precinct in the city.

Queen Victoria Market is fantastic and is in the city.

a great place to go about three km from my house would be bells beach. it is about 1hr 15min out of melbourne in a south west direction. A great surf beach. tonnes of places and clinics to go to learn surfing (all age groups) all you have to bring to most clinics is a wetsuit. and do not forget to bring a wetsuit . its a bit cold because july is winter in aussie. oh, and don't be dissapointed if you carn't go to bells the first time, it's a bit rough. but torquay very close to bells is a town with lots of accomadation, as it's a popular touirist town although in winter the population is only about 3000 so its nice and quiet. i have lived in torquay almost all of mylife although now i live in jan juc which is pretty much the same town. they share the same shopping center, shops, population and postcode (3228). hope you come to stay!!!!

I was planning to go in July as well, but a friend e-mailed me and said put it off as the city shuts down a bit for that month. I asked this question a couple of months ago and was told either to google it or to go to the footy. Contact ticketek. They may have something helpful
