Go to a staffing/temp agency in your area. They are trained to help you. They will help with your resume, tell you what you are best qualified for and guide along.

First, don't stop applying. Two, you have to be, at least a little, focused and know (or appear to know) what you want to do should you go on an interview. And Lastly, if you have a resume make sure it looks good, is on one page and is skills based. This means to list all of the qualitative, quantitative and computer skills that you can offer someone as well as any relevant coursework.

PS: Networking and knowing/meeting someone who can get your foot in the door would be a big help here...

You don't. You need experience. If you want a better job it is not going to fall in your lap. Good jobs are worth working for. Consider going back to school or learning a new skill. If all else fails, and you are confident enough to do so, start your own business.

I would suggest finding a big company in an industry that you are interested in and get an entry-level position. If you are willing to work hard and are qualified, you should be able to move up and around in the company. The sky is your limit if you are motivated, smart and a hard worker!

A good way to get experience is to volunteer your skills to a charity. Pick a charity that matches your morals/politics/etc., and you'll find that you get more than just something for your resume.

Volunteer somewhere that you can use as experience. If you're young enough, join the armed forces and get into that field so when you leave you can claim experience.
