To keep the game fair? Absolutely.
To keep the fans coming? No way.
Unless there is a need to change things, leave them the way they are. The system works well enough.

No baseball should not have a salary cap. Why because teams that don't spend money do have the money to spend but the owners don't want to spend it on their teams they would rather pocket the cash. Also in the past few years the teams that have won the World Series have been teams that don't necessarily spend a lot of money. And in the past 6 years there have been 6 different World Series Champs:

2000 Yankees (big market team)
2001 D-Backs (small market / middle market)
2002 Angels (middle market at the time they won, now they would be big market)
2003 Marlins (small market)
2004 Red Sox (big market)
2005 White Sox (middle market)

Spending the most money doesn't always guarantee success. It comes down to what talent is acquire via free agency and what talent the teams develop in their minor league system.

There should be a MINNIMUM salary. I'm sick of teams fielding teams with some measly payroll and screwing their fans of a good product. There is a salary cap now, although it is a soft cap. Any team breaking this limit pays a luxury tax to the league, which the league divides among the "less fortunate" teams. Unfortunately those owners in turn usually pocket that money rather than put it back on the field. The idea of the tax was so those teams would buy decent players, which in turn would put more people in the stands and would make them more money and would than provide them with income to make the team even greater. Think about it, could you imagine someone telling your employer that they can only spend so much on employees. What???? that's crazy. actually they have a name for it. it's called Communism.

Yes, but there should be a minimum salary cap as well, so that teams like the Marlins would be forced to spend money to field a competitive team. I think a minimum salary cap, along with the luxury tax, actually would be better than a maximum cap to help the smaller market teams.

Absolutely not.

If there's going to be a cap on spending, there should also be a floor or basement of some kind. A minimum salary per team that has to be paid out.

The reason baseball is how it is isn't just because the Yankees, Mets and Red Sox spend over $100M a year...

It's because teams like the Royals, Pirates, Marlins and Twins REFUSE to spend ANY money to try to compete.

They're more at fault than the big spenders if you ask me.

Yes, however, baseball needs to be much more strict about which towns can sustain teams. With a salary cap should come attendance requirements. That will give owners incentives to field a competitive team and not just field the minimum.

there is no REAL salary cap in baseball if u go over u simply pay a fine, unlike football where u must get under the cap under the current cap formation it benifits big market teams like the yanks, sox, and other big city teams

Do you mean should there be a meaningful salary cap? There is a cap, but if you go over it you just pay a fine. Or isn't that the case anymore?

If you ask me all pro sports should have a salary cap. Their salaries should be capped lower than what they are. We have good teachers and childcare providers who really help shape the future that aren't making half as much as they should. Where are their millions?

theoretically a salary cap would work best
but given the state of things it doesnt look like
a salary cap will be come soon
as it is right now, don't blame the lack of a salary cap
blame tight-fisted owners who would rather build stadiums
often at some expense to taxpayers (orioles) and earn money
and then choose not to re-invest profits into the team to better it

Yeah, I think in all professional sports there should be a salary cap. That way the players who really love the game will be in there!!'

Or something like that!
