No -- the thing about "Illegal to remove the tag" is meant for retailers and resellers. The information has to be on there for the purchaser. The purchaser can do what he wants with the tags.

The reason for the requirement is so that the consumer (and other safety inspectors) can know the materials used in mattress or other thing, for reasons of allergies, fire safety, etc.

But there is one thing I can't answer about this question: why is it in the Books & Authors category?

This is what our father had told us about them when we were young: The tags were originally put on by the manufacturer for reasons of hygiene. At that time bed-bugs (the big cockroach-like kind) were not just a myth. If the tag was still on it, the consumer could assume it was a new mattress.
The consumer only was to remove the tag.

It is not illegal for the buyer to pull the tags off of the mattresses and things. It is illegal for the seller of the new article to pull off the tags and things. It is to prevent sellers from tampering with new products

It is illegal to pull them off before they have been purchased. When you get them home do what you want. They are there as a record of what the contents of the mattresses are made of. That way you know that your mattress hasn't been stuffed with some old rags or something gross like that. Also they are for fire safety (flamability etc.)and allergy issues.

Pretty much what everyone else said. But also, so the mattress can not be relsold becuase of things like bed bugs and diseases, there are very strict laws regarding the resale of a used mattress. Whenever you buy a mattress you should remove the tag so it can not be resold.

because the tag police are accessible gazing. that's so the buyer is accepted with how the mattress grow to be made and what resources, once you purchase it rip away. that's like those Ferrite Cores they placed on cables to keep them from generating EMI, that is so the manufacture meets FCC rules, I take them off as they seem to be a nuisance.

Because reconditioned mattresses are sold legally, but consumers ahve the right to know if their mattress is made of all new materials or recycled fillings, etc. Sometimes people do try to pass used or reconditioned mattresses off as new. If retailers aren't legit, bedbugs, etc are more easily spread.

The only person who can do it legally is the consumer. In fact, some tags are putting that exception in writing.

They 'must be' attached before they can be sold, as new. If you ever go to pawn shops, flea markets or garage sales and check you'll see that probally 99% of those tags are missing. It depends on when you do it!

it's illegal for the manufacturer or retailer -- not the buyer -- because the tags contain consumer protection information (e.g., safety warnings).
