Texas is a great place to retire - you can pick the beach, the hill country, the piney woods or even the high plains of the Panhandle. And NO state income tax. Then of course, there is Florida, if you can handle the humidity and the price of real estate! But there is no state income tax there either.
I'm curious what "lovely & affordable" places you've been investigating??

Dr. K, you want to find a lovely and affordable place to retire, right? Do you enjoy all four seasons? Look into New Hampshire! This is what I found in a quick yahoo search. I live in Vermont on the New Hampshire border currently finishing my nursing school here, but plan to look for work and buy a home in New Hampshire because of the following:
• New Hampshire does not tax an individual's earned income (W-2 wages).
• The state does tax, at a 5 percent rate, income from dividends and interest.
• The dividends and interest tax is due from resident individuals, partnerships, limited liability companies, and fiduciaries with non-transferable shares earning more than $2,400 annually ($4,800 for joint filers) form their investments. The following exemptions may apply:
A $1,200 exemption for residents who are 65 years of age or older.
A $1,200 exemption for residents who are blind, regardless of age.
A $1,200 exemption for disabled individuals who are unable to work, provided they have not reached their 65th birthday.
$ Sales tax
• There is no state sales tax in New Hampshire.
As you can see, if you can stand having a white winter, rainy spring, a warm but comfortable summer, and a brilliantly colored fall............look at New Hampshire as a place to settle down. The traffic is minimal (even in Manchester and Concord) compared to other large cities and the country is fruitful with clean air and wonderful mountain views all around! Check out the White Mountain State!

Heck no !. As a Dr. you would need to explain what in your eyes is affordable. Many States have lovely places to retire and they do not have a state income tax, Texas being one. Of course you have to choose a state that caters to your lifestyle, IE, hunting, fishing, boating and so on. Then google that state to see if they have a state income tax.

Tennessee has no state income tax. I've lived in southeast Tennessee and now reside in the central part of the state. There is beauty everywhere here.

Some places are so affordable you don't mind paying a state sales tax.
I compare living in california now to living in Idaho....
the housing in Idaho is 1/4 the price of a home in California. The same house would cost me a couple hundred in property taxes where the place in california would cost me 8,000 for the same type of house. Add insurance in there and the cost of water...Idaho looks marvelous...I can hardly wait to make it back.
NOT TO MENTION I DON'T HAVE TO WAIT IN LINE AT DMV IN IDAHO...but then my old rat shack in California went from 65,000 when I bought it and is now 6 years later worth 250,000 because of the land.....that wouldn't happen in Idaho..I'll give them that.
