If you like to built desktop app, C++ will be best. To go to gaming industry you should have good knowledge on grphics programming.
If you want to go in serverside, you will need knowledge on php, Sql, C++ and some Unix experience.

This really depends on what you are wanting to do with your programming skills. Are you wanting to script Web pages, are you wanting to create desktop applications, are you wanting to create video games.
Programming is just like anything else, there are niche areas that exist and each requires a different skill set and different languages.

As a software development manager of 20, my recommendation would be to go to college. Just trying to pick a language and "learn" it will be very difficult to compete in today's job market. You will learn several languages in school, but more important you will learn critical thinking, algorithms, database design and architecture, etc., that is very hard to learn on your own.

The big ones tend to be C++, Java, .NET, and other such versatile, well-documented languages.
Web languages such as HTML, JSPs and the like are also good.
THe more languages you learn, and the better you are with them, the more likely you'll be able to find a job that matches your qualifications.

It really depends what you want to do.
For desktop and "enterprise" programming you would probably want to learn Java or C/C++/
For web design you will need Javascript and PHP.
.net is also getting big so you might want to learn C#, J#, Visual Basic, whatever is needed.

If you want to develop games, start with C language. If you want desktop apps, then I would start with VB and/or JAVA. If you like database programming and development, start with SQL/Oracle.
