It was small black,hairy, with white stipes on its legs and a white dot on its back

It wasn't a black widow spider which are poisonous.They are dark black and shiny not hairy with white stripes on the leg. They have a red hour glass shape on the belly.I believe it might be just an ordinary jumping spider found in most homes non poisonous.

Sounds like one of the common jumping spiders,
Phidippus audax. It certainly was not a black
widow, which are not particularly hairy and don't
have white on their legs.
