A crackback in football is an illegal block. It is when one player lays on the ground behind a lineman and then another player from the same team pushes the lineman into/or tripping him over the player that is laying down.

it could also mean when a wide receiver "crack" blocks the outside linebacker or d. end on a sweep to his side. the linebacker or d. end is watching the play and flowing with the ball, thus they get "cracked". this is one of the best parts of being a wide receiver, i loved doing this in high school!!!
