Had a whole of herd went up steps to get in the barn and down them to go to pasteure twice a day, every day. But it IS correct cow have poor dept perception and if they are not used to it, a cow will see even a 1 inch ledge as a HUGE hole & refuse to step over it. New cow in our herd would stop & stare at the steps, Afraid of them till about 6 cows pushed past them or a boss cow gave them a shove to get them out of the way.

they can go up or down hill/stairs - so can horses. They don't *like* going down stairs because it seems like a hole to fall - but they *can* do it. Put a hungry cow at the top and a trough of feed at the bottom and they *will* go down the stairs.

I have heard that this is indeed true. But, I can't say for sure because I have never seen it or tried it or known anyone who has.

I know people who have barns with steps and they had to lead their calves outside. They will defiantly do it if they are forced to or lead out.
