It might have been James Lee Burke's "Purple Cane Road"? It takes place in New Orleans and the main character is Dave Robicheaux. Most of the on-line bookstores have it so you can look and see if it is the one.
Or John D. Macdonald's "A Purple Place for Dying"? Another great mystery writer.
