As a group the left tries to pander to SO MANY different fringe wackos that it must be incredibly difficult to keep track of all of your positions, exampled by that constant "flip-flop" that leftist politicans do. An example would be how Senators Kerry and Clinton are both for and against the war in Iraq at the same time.
I think that to be effective in national elections you sort of have to stick with your core. Does the left have a definable core? Will they cut loose some of the fringe to not be dragged down by it? Do they care? Is it possible that being liked by all the fringe wacko's is actually more important to them than is winning elections?
