I just thought it's a shame for such a great sport to be appreciated everywhere in the world, but not US.

American are such haters.
- no contacts?? people's legs are broken on the field!
- it's a game for wussies?? Can you sprint (not run) for 90 mins straight??
- boring?? american sports allow players to score every other mins, a point in those sports has wayyyy less value than a goal in soccer. A team scores a point, nahh... the other team will score another one in a min.
- It's a sports for people who can't use their hands???? this is the funniest. you are required to have more skills to control a ball using your feet.
and on and on and on.... don't hate, try to play soccer just once! and you'll know what the sports is about

Who cares? The world is doing so fine without the US as a football favorite. Leave them alone with their "American football", baseball, hockey and other pu**y games.

sure, the day hell freezes over. soccer is no more popular here than it was 30 years ago. it's a very popular sport for pre-teen kids to play because the rules are simple to understand and there's not much eqipment involved, and there's no contact so there's not much of a chance of getting hurt. but by the time these kids grow up, they become football fans instead of soccer fans, because football is so popular here it's part of the culture. football is as american as apple pie. people call baseball americas pastime, but football is americas passion. and besides world cup time where can people watch soccer? NOWHERE. it's not on TV anywhere and the pro leauge here is very small(only 6 or 8 teams). people here just don't care, and that's not going to change. and by the way, basketball is down the list in popularity here. football, NASCAR, baseball and golf are all more popular. soccer isn't even a blip on the radar screen

I don't think that will ever happen. I'm not sure what's the history behind this, but if the U.S. can't even respect the name of the game, how can it fully learn to enjoy the game itself? Also, Americans enjoy sports with lots of scoring (immediate gratification). It will continue to gain popularity, and perhaps as Americans learn more about the game it will move from being simply something to have the kids play to a more seriously enjoyed sport. But I doubt it will ever SURPASS basketball, American football, baseball, or even golf.

No for three reasons
1) Popular only in third world countries (and yes England might as well be a third world country)
2) Not enough action. It's like hockey except you only get 5 shots on goal in a game.
3) Not enough physical contact. America loves contact sports and soccer is not a contact sport, it's a flopping sport.

I wish it would but probably not. however watch out 'cause in the next like 10 to 15 years when the millions of youth soccer players are in college and what not the US soccer program will grow exponentionally and soccer will gain full scale status in the USA. I mean the MLS has to keep adding teams because so many players want to play. I wish the WUSA would come back so girls have a goal too.

Why is it a shame?
People are different. The U.S. doesn't really care too much for soccer. Big deal.
And NO. It will NEVER surpass basketball or football.

No, it likely will not in the near future. Possibly down the road 20-30 years when there are more European and Hispanic immigrants. Have a soccer game in California of any significance and 100,000+ people show up. Have one in Utah 15 show up.

I doubt anything will ever surpass American football.
Basketball? Maybe 50 years down the road. Who knows?

It's getting bigger with each passing generation, so I think that in the future soccer is going to be big in the US. I do like the nfl and nba, but it does not have that world wide excitement that comes with the world cup. The baseball classic tried to capture that, but it has a long way to go.

It already has passed basketball. Football, it might not, though its possible. Soccer is catching up to football, its #1 in Europe and South America.
