What kind of steps do I take in setting up an interview with an athlete from any of the three main professional team sports? (baseball, football, basketball)
I've done interviews with college athletes, but I need an idea how to get these. I write for a newspaper, and I'm trying to set some more interviews up.

I would begin with team's public relations office and check to see if the player I was interested in interviewing has a personal publicist. The PR people can provide essential background information and make your interview time more efficient.

The "You Know" and the "You know what I'm saying" are the ones that get me. Perhaps you think I'm cynical, the I think God gave some people intellect and other people physical abilities. And its very very rare that one person has both. Most athletes have been pampered from childhood because they had athletic ability. These people (mostly males) have been given a red carpet through life. A select few eventually do make it to the professional ranks where they suffer from the ability to cope. Many are uneducated and do finish University but really never had to do a lot of the work. The result of all this is what you describe in your question. It seems that many are just plain dumb. Having said this, I do say that I admire the athlete who is bright, articulate and educated. Scholar athletes and special people like the football player Emmitt Smith who went back to school to earn a degree deserve special credit for not only being a great athlete, but being a credit to his family and community. I'm sure there are other athletes that do this, I just can't think of any right now. Good Day

Don't Know but good luck.

You'd probably have to goto school for journalizum etc., get some credentials and then go from there. Apply to work for a larger paper that perhaps the Pro's have heard of...
