NOTRE DAME

College football has evolved so much; one of the 'mutations', if you will, is parity. The past ages of this grand game have seen some teams rise to immortality, but the setting for modern college football is much different. With this in mind, I'll only comment on the modern era, say 1980 to present, because parity has certainly become a large factor. As for the champions before 1980, I can not speculate.
The 2001 Miami Hurricanes were indeed dominant, and gave the most a sound thrashing that season, but I believe the 1995 Cornhuskers edge them out. The Cane's undoing comes in the form of Boston College, a team only 9 yards away from their biggest upset since Notre Dame in 1990.
The '95 Cornhuskers, however, never played a game that was in question after the third quarter, and only one team came within 14 points. Not that this is Miami's fault, but they didn't play an undefeated team for the title, either. Another reason is this: the Hurricanes were absolutely loaded with NFL-bound talent on defense, and a pro-style offense. Nebraska had some as well, but ran an offense thought of as archaic to most. Yet, they steamrolled everyone in their path with it. For them, it was not so much a question of X's and O's dancing around in special fancy plays, but simple concepts, such as turning the opponent into roadkill. There is no place like Nebraska.

95 Huskers hands down. the '01 huskers were overrated and got beaten by Miami 37-14. The 95 huskers probobly would have had it the other way around. They weren't just a run team. That's the beauty of it. They had excellent receivers and even if Tommie Frazier couldn't hit 'em (which he still did well), backup Brook Berringer was spot on and would have had a successful NFL career had he not died in a plane crash before the draft after that season. Their defense was rock solid too. I think the 04 trojans would have met their match, but the 95 huskers would have manhandled a powerhouse. The huskers beat a great Florida team by about 40 points. usc 04 beat an overrated Oklahoma team pretty bad. 95 Huskers beat 04 Trojans 35-14

It pains me to say it but the 2001 Miami Hurricanes. They were 12-0 with an average margin of victory of 34 points. Their team included All-American QB Ken Dorsey and running back Clinton Portis (who racked up 1,200 yards on the ground). A few more: offensive tackle Bryant "Mount" McKinnie, tight end Jeremy Shockey, cornerbacks Phillip Buchanon and Mike Rumph, and safety Edward Reed, all first-round selections in the 2002 NFL draft. A lot of people may point to earlier teams like Nebraska ('71)and USC ('72) but I think to have the kind of success they had in 2001, when the overall talent level of their competition is freakish when compared to earlier generations, places them at the top.

Well, you may say am biased by my screen name, but many in the know say that the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers get that honor. I personally think the 1995 Huskers are the best team ever.

I'm biased but at any level the 1996 Marshall team 15-0 1AA national champs avg. margin of victory was 30 some points and they had Randy Moss who could have played in the N.F.L right then but like I said I'm biased.
