God youre right the acting IS terrible. Iv watched eastenders for years and years, lately i only watch it in the hope that it will improve. The script is pathetic, the writiers should be shot.(Ok maybe not shot.) The actors are as wooden as the Ark and the characters are unrealistic. I still love it though. I saw a blue dimante chocker on Kat slater about 2 years ago and ive been looking for one ever since. Jesus im a classy bird me!

My mom watch soaps 24/7 so its hard for me not to get addicted I'm actually watching GH right now.It also could be the fact that the producers always let the show end with a cliffhanger so you sometimes get caught up wanting to know whats gonna happen tomorrow

The acting is terrible? I don't know which ones you've seen, and I certainly can't say about the ones in the UK or Australia (your use of the word "mate"), but in America, a lot of your popular primetime television and movie stars started in the soaps.
Some have even returned to them, now and then.
As to the why, as one person said....it's an escape. No one believes it imitates real life (I hope). They're usually quite "over the top", but it's nice to see someone with more "problems" than you have. LOL.
I've said this to another person....I love to read, and hate it when a good book ends. To me, this is a good book that never ends.

But dont you see? Its the rubbish acting and rubbish plot lines which make the soaps so good!
Personally i think there is some sort of subliminal mind control behind it.
When you see the fruit stall in Eastenders it makes you want some fruit, when you see Pauline Fowlers clip on lego hair it makes you want to buy some lego, etc etc.
I think there is some weird addictive vibes being sent through the T.V when you watch them

Usually its a generational thing. I watch All My Children because my mother watched when I was little, and her mother watched it before her. Most women end up inheriting the soaps their mother watched.

people often get attached to the soap that they are watching because most of the time they can relate to it in real life

I dunno, but I for one can't stand them. they are all bull s***, and the storylines are all the same: someone gets married, someone dies, someone has an affair, some teens run off together, someone falls off a cliff - but survives! next they'll be telling us that this one is actually their own grandpa!!!!!!!!!!!
what happened to the good British sitcom???
