i have over 100 mature avocado trees under my care. 2 post graduate degrees in science, been a state certified univ of calif master gardener for over 15 years and the answer to your question is... almost. yes, they will ripen on the tree. usually unevenly and the avocado rats will get the best parts before you do. the hass has a long harvest period, spring into fall. better to pick 'um and let them ripen inside. ALWAYS pick them with at least a quarter in of stem still on the fruit. don't pull 'um off the tree! clip them off. if you leave the stem behind they ripen uneven and you will loose much of the flavor. think of it as a new born baby. always leave a bit of the umbilical cord behind. when it falls off naturally, you can bet the fruit is just about ready to eat. tree grows best if you allow the natural leaf drop remain under the tree as a mulch. ya, i know, it looks messy in the yard, but if you want lots of good, tasty fruit ya gotta do what makes the tree happy. but you didn't ask for tips on tree care, so i won't go there. the fruit holds well on the tree, so you don't have to pick it all at one time. the fruit you pick today and eat next week would still be just as good if you didn't pick it for another month. enjoy.

You can let them ripen on the tree but there is a high likelihood that birds and other creatures will eat them if they are ripe on the tree. It takes a little practice and you really just have to make a judgment call on size and skin color as to when avocados are ready to pick. Also, if it is fit to pick, the seed inside will generally rattle around when you shake it. Anyway, I wish you all the best with this. I love a good avocado/tomato salad myself with lots of oil and vinegar. Good luck.

I am an animal lover and I wish I lived in a more rural setting, but school doesn't permit that right now. My cats live in paradise and are not boxed up all the time. We have times when we go out, and me and KiKi spend hours in the snow playing in the winter.
I spend more money on all of their things than I do on myself most if the time, and they have all that cats need and could ever want. They are very content.
