also how many total discus can i safely put in my tank? also do i need a protein skimmer?

You are fine for the time being, but if they grow much larger you will have to look into aeration. It will also give you the ability to add two or three more discus. Protien skiimers are not necessary as long as you are sure that there is no extra food left in the tank after feeding them and plants would help.
