Because they all got to the other side......I am really not too sure about a herds of chickens....maybe you mean a flock....and there is a place in a far far land where the herds of chickens are plentiful and the big cyclops monster is trying to eat them.....Its the place where the goose lays golden eggs......

There are....they just aren't the kind we are accustomed to seeing on farms. The chickens you mean are, by definition, "domestic fowl" and therefore there cannot be any wild ones. There are prairie chickens and all sorts of asian fowl that are semi-domesticated or completely wild.

There are many wild chickens in South America.
We had a wild flock in my neighborhood in CA, but they were decended from loosed tame birds.

Because chickens are prey animals (meaning they are food for a lot of other animals) so they would not be running around in the open where everything could see them, catch them and eat them.

chickens have been domesticated for thousands of years and have no defense abilitys left such as hiding climbing and or flying
as the were never bred for intelligence this is one very good reason as well. preditors will completely devasate any such heard if one existed

Chickens don't need to roam. They eat everything that is around them naturally- bugs, dirt, etc.
