Death is a scary thing ... the unknown, the possible pain ... but all that has been said.
I think as long as your fear doesn't paralyze you, being afraid is natural. Just don't ever let it stop you from doing what you want to do!!!

Fearing death / fearing the unknown is familiar to almost everyone. You probably get pre-occupied with some things every so often, and this is your latest 'item' that's sitting on your brain.
This is a mental game, and so here's some things you can think of.
Talk to others about pain. - real pain. Since they're really not better than you, surely you can endure what they had to endure.
Determine that heaven or non-existance is not to be worried about. You do have something to worry about if when you see that there's a hell. (I'm rather skeptical and critical, -but now I'm a christian, -I'd worry about hell)
Get a level of maturity, - you'll get pre-occupied with another subject in a couple of hours / days.

Ok, I know you don't want any religious answers. I am not a "traditionally religious" person, but I am a Christian. What I can tell you is that I have been where you are, I know what you are feeling. There were times that I would get so overwhelmed by fear of death (how, when, pain, what will happen to my children) that I would literally have a panic attack. What helped me was becoming a Christian. Whatever faith you choose, I really think that will help you. I'm sure you have heard all the standard Christian answers, so I won't bother putting them in. What I will say is that the reason I was having those attacks is that it was God trying to get my attention, trying to get me to turn to Him. It's just food for thought for you, but even though you didn't want that response, I didn't feel right not posting it.
A very well-known atheist once said in a letter to a preacher something to this effect: "How can you call yourself a Christian when you know I am going to hell and yet do nothing about it? Aren't Christians supposed to care about the state of other people's souls? Shouldn't you be beating your brains in trying to convince me of the consequences of my actions?"
He was right. I can't call myself a good Christian if I don't try to tell people where they are headed. I am not trying to condemn you. I am trying to tell you that I have been there, and what happened to get me out of that place. If you want to know more, feel free to email me. I will not push the subject any further otherwise. Either way, I will pray for you to have some peace in your life and for God to lead someone across your path to help you with this situation.

good question, cuz I was just like you for 44 years...then my mother died and the world changed. I miss her so much I can't wait to die, so I can talk to her again...if there is nothing after death at least I'll be out of pain and won't know the difference, so...somewhere in these two thoughts I've let go of the fear and just have the best time I can while I'm still here and look forward to fidning out what comes next...

Death is inevitable, we all have to die.Since you have no spiritual background you have a right to fear . our humanistic nature is to fear that which we do not understand, so i guess it's alright.we don't know what awaits us after death, because we are bombarded with different philosophies.religion teaches us that a better place awaits us,if you believed in this, you would be comforted, some also teaches of reincarnation.makes you feel its never going to end, then looking at it scientifically, the law of energy conservation is that energy cannot be created nor destroyed so we just go back to being plant fertilizer.
Guess that the bottom line is that you need to find yourself and purpose, then that may bring some sort of comfort.

why do u associate pain with dying? some people die without pain. Dieing in my sleep, that is how I want to go, but then of course I believe in God and Heaven...I have something to look forward to. I'm sorry that you don't. Go work in a nursing home and take care of the sickest people and then maybe you won't fear death. But my bet is that they believe in God and don't fear it themselves.

Unfortunately we are all in the same boat and I think we all fear this. I think that is why people look to their faith...because there are no answers. The only way to deal with it and this fear, is to live for the very moment you are in and deal with your death, and possibly pain when it happens. Just build you strength through life and convince yourself that you can deal with anything this cruel life/world has to dish out to you. That's all I can suggest.

The only way I know to get over a fear of death is to face it....in a controlled way, of course....go skydiving or do a free fall jump somewhere....I'm not advocating stupidity here, but do something along those lines. i think that may help a little.
It's really a mind over matter thing.......accepting that yes, it WILL happen someday.........there are plently of other things in life to occupy your thoughts, right? Explore those thoughts instead. :)

I heard that the main reason people fear death is the thought that it is over there is nothing else.
You cease to exist and that thought is hard to imagine. You know we are all born and we don't remember any pain during that process, (our mother did and she probley wished she were dead.) death is a moment it is not long pain your here then your not,so just like we are born we all die.
Hebrews 2:14 (The Message)
14-15Since the children are made of flesh and blood, it's logical that the Savior took on flesh and blood in order to rescue them by his death. By embracing death, taking it into himself, he destroyed the Devil's hold on death and freed all who cower through life, scared to death of death

live life to the fullest as if today was your last day here say what you need to say your letting your mind make you crazy over something that 's uncontrolable it's going to happen to you and everyone else I personally believe the pain you feel at death is from the grief that you see your family and friends dealing with in accepting that your dying it's mind over matter also like walking over hot coals barefoot people actually do that i myself walk barefoot over rocks and it hurt my feet but i repeatedly told myselfit didn't hurt and it don't just remember mind over matter
