The Viola is somewhat larger and has a deeper more rich tone to it. It is used in many movie scores while you would find violins more in country bands and fiddlin' competitions

Viola is bigger and has a deeper sound, the violin is able to hit the higher notes. To the untrained eye they look pretty much teh same.
