"New observational results and theoretical advances are coming in rapidly; cosmology is a very exciting subject. We are getting close to answering these old questions: why are we here, where did we come from?"

After 15 answers, no one seems to recall that Einstein found God, and Hawking is no Einstein. Furthermore, why do many of you assume that I am a Christian? In fact, I am a biophysicist that works in the field of directed evolution. I conclude that the hypothesis, "God Exists", is so inflammatory, that it will not be tested by experiments that Hawking is doing.

Stephen Hawking hasn't found God because he really isn't looking for God, he's looking for answers. And he is an intellectual, and many intellectuals have a problem with faith, despite the fact that science is itself a faith. Or rather, a collection of assumptions based on what we perceive in the physical evidence that's been collected over the years. As an intellectual myself I struggled for years with it, until I was finally...gifted with faith. And believe me, it was a gift. I think it has to be given, actually.
Have you ever heard of those little inkblots psychiatrists use? You look at that them and tell the psychiatrist what you see. Well, in a sense that's exactly what has happened in the scientific community (though to be fair, there are many scientists who believe in God). They see what they want to see. And what they say about what they see tells you more about them than what's actually there. So despite the fact that science is supposed to be objective, it never can really be objective because each and every one of us lives life through his/her own perceptions, and the way his/her own subjective mind chooses to think of those perceptions.

What the hell does physics have to do w/ religion, and how are you getting that he doesn't believe in god from a statement like that? I see no evidence of him denouncing god's existance. I think you are just like all the other "so-called christians" in which you think that just because it's not in the bible it doesn't exist. The bible was not written by men of science, but men of faith. At some point, there needs to be a definative line at which religion and science are not confused, and this is one of those times. All these people that try to prove or disprove god's existance with math and science are not very bright. They may be book smart but they lack even the slightest bit of common sense. You can't use tangible proofs to relate to intangible beliefs.

I'm afraid I don't understand the question.

It doesn't require intelligence to find God- just faith.

Think about Carl Sagan- the brilliant Astronomer. He, too, was an atheist- but he was extremely gifted in intelligence.

But Carl Sagan was a good man- besides being an enlightened scholar- and I hope that God allowed him into heaven when he passed away in 1996.

What has "god" got to do with science? Hawking is a physicist not a theologian. Maybe he is simply too intelligent to believe in "god." Or, maybe his notion of "god" is not reducable to some guy on a throne with attending angels dancing on pinheads.

Not everyone "finds God." Some of the smartest people in the world have shunned organized religion. Some people don't believe in God, they only believe in what they can see and hear and touch, they believe in science. Your statement is pretty bold, you assume that all "intellegent people" find God, and that everyone else is just stupid... that's really offensive to those that don't believe in "God."

It sounds like you're asking a philosophy question in the physics room.

Perhaps he will find God when he answers those questions. It's apparent he hasn't stopped asking questions, like some people who find God do; his mind is still open.

Ony stupid people find God.

Devoting your life to a fictional being and despising most of humanity in the process takes a certain degree of arrogant ignorance.

Don't you mean "If someone as intelligent as Steven Hawking hasn't found God, doesn't that probably mean that I've made an incorrect assumption?" ????

are you kidding me? why dont you demonstrate a little of your own intelligence and notice that if the smartest people in the world dont believe in god, maybe he doesnt exist. wow! have you ever thought that maybe the bible is just a nice little book of bedtime stories?

Its only a matter of time....how many of us ridicule Aztecs and other sun worshipers today? As science unfolds so does the myths.

Because he is smart enough to believe and understand science instead of made up stories that contradict themselves.
