I was there just over a week ago, and I had a great time, getting hopelessly drunk on cheap, high strength lager. The Slovaks are wonderful people (and incredibly pissed off about the movie which, incidentally, was filmed in Czech Republic). There's the Danube, beautiful mountains, quaint towns and a population with a higher per capita knowledge of ice hockey than any nation on earth (well, except for Canada)! Go, be as careful as you would be anywhere else, and have fun!

Read the State Dept warning posted here.
Having been to Poland, Czech, Slovakia and Hungary lately, Slovakia is the least Western. There is little that caters to tourists; the shops are Soviet style; and there are really no great places to visit.
Budapest and Prague are far better cities to visit than the Slovak capital of Bratislava. The mountains are better in Czech also. The best thing I can say about that city is that the boat ride there from Vienna on the Danube is great.

Why not? There is so much crime elsewhere in Europe, so...
It mostly depends on which places you go. Slovakia is fine enough and it is extremely good visiting it.
I'm not Slovak, I'm Macedonian, but I do like Slovakia.

RE:
Is Slovakia safe ? ;-)?
Having just seen "Hostel", a group of us are going backpacking to Slovakia - will we get abducted and tortured, before being mercilessly and gruesomely murdered?
Or will we have a great time, and just get hopelessly drunk on cheap, high strength lager.
I suspect the latter, but just...

Prague is one of the cities worth-visit and to accomplish this you can begin planning your holiday with hotelbye . Beginning with the wonderful place around the Prague Castle or the Strahov monastery with its outstanding library and end with …the whole splendid city, Prague is merely incredible. In Prague you may also visit the small home wherever Franz Kafka labored or the wonderful Prague Castle gardens from where you could enjoy a distinctive see of the city with its picturesque red roofs. In this city you'll never get bored. If you will go through the spring you may find the spring trees in bloom; in the summer you will dsicover long dusks; fall provides you with colorful leaves and particular light and in winter months you will enjoy the complete town included with simple bright snow.

The scepticism about eastern Europe needs to stop. It's safer than major western cities both in Europe and the US. You'll find that the city isn't any different than what you're used to seeing wherever it is you live. Of course nobody ever beleives all of this till they've visited themselves, ah well ><
