Humor me, please. I really don't understand the fascination with celebs like Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lyndsey Lohan. All they seem to be known for is where they are seen, who they are partying with who they are sleeping with, how much weight they have lost, etc. When I was growing up, the people I idolized had talent, brains and substance. Is it me, or has our society changed this much??? Are we this shallow? No bashing please, I TRULY don't understand and I am not being ugly when I ask this.

I don't understand it either. The two celebrities that I really like are both honest, decent, intelligent and talented people. I love Josh Groban because of his talent, his character, his sense of humor, his morals...and then I like Naveen Andrews from Lost because he dates Barbara Hershey, who is about 15 years older than him and when asked why, he said because of her strength of character. He didn't understand the facscination with women without substance like Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan.

Yes, some people are just shallow.

I think people idolize celebs cause of the fantasy. Like a crush for example. Lets say you have a crush a dude/chick, you've never spoken to him/her but yet you feel like you know them. In your head your making that person seem perfect. Everything about them is perfect...their smile, their eyes, etc. When they walk pass you, you feel like your going to faint but the minute you actually speak to them and get to know who they really are, the fantasy is over. It's the same thing wit celebs, people have these unrealistic "feelings" for them because they feel like they know them. They read in magazine all their favorites things, what food they like, where they would go on a first date, basically anything and everything there's to know bout a celebs you can find out and this apeals to people. I think people who a overly crazy about celebs really need a life, basically. They are obsessed with a fantasy and that is never good. I do agree with you regarding the people I looked up to while growing up. Off the top of my head I can say while in high school(and still do) I looked up to Quinten Tarentino. And Quinten is no Lindsey Lohan but definantly has talent, brains and substance.

I think in part it is jealousy, after all we all like to see them humiliated in public. Also people like to live vicariously through them. And some wishful thinking. If they can achieve fame and money for just having a pretty face and no education or obvious talent, why can't I. Kinda sad that we pay more attention to actors over authors. Nice question though, I had to think about it.

I think we are idiots for idolizing any celebrity. They are regular people like you and me. What a waste, of time, money and energy!
