As I was once told the only stupid question is the one that is not asked.

Well I have seen some questions which are really stupid but then I have the sense not to answer them. I noticed some fella following someone else around and saying horrible things about the questions and I thought, surely if he was so clever and stuff then he would have better things to do than go around telling people he doesn't like their questions. These particular questions were perfectly ok. It gets me when decent, innocent questions are reported or the asker is accused of being stupid but then you have loads of really rude or inappropriate questions which just stay there and often get more "serious" answers than some proper questions.

Because they do.

Legally speaking, we are guaranteed the right to express criticism of anything in any public form.

Morally speaking, we have the right (some would say a duty) to judge all information that we come into contact with. Judgmental analysis is the only way that we can discern truth from fiction and protect ourselves from those who wish to deceive us. If the information is not overtly deceitful, it is often still appropriate to point out misinformation or poor logic. Assuming that the criticism is made constructively, it can help the questioner learn something new or correct erroneous reasoning.

That being said, it's not appropriate to call someone's question stupid unless the question is willfully ignorant or malicious. People who criticize others' questions out of a need to demean or feel better about themselves are just @ssholes. Not too much I can say about that.

Most questions deserve to be answered. Have you ever stopped to think that the people that are answering these questions are honestly trying to help these troubled people? I am sorry to tell you but as you can see there are many folks out there that cannot even write a sentence very well or spell a word. We are not trying to be judges, just trying to give you some good advice. If you don't want our advice then don't ask.

I don't know, I get that a lot on my questions, it's really annoying, the people who ask stupid/daft/odd questions generally know what they are doing, so why state the obvious? I'll tell you why, just for the two points and to try to make themselves look clever in front of their friends etc. Well, to all you people who do that, it's not big, it's not clever and it's not funny!!!! Stop it!!!!!!

The majority I think are just ignorant kids who have no friends, so have to sit infront of a computer screen taking their self hate out on others. Anyone who answers a serious question they have know idea about is obviously either a child or an ignoramus, craving attention. For example, how many serious answers have you got for this Q? The first and fourth here certainly help in proving my point LOL!

People have the right to tell you anything. If they think your question is stupid, they have the right to say so. If you think that all the questions are asked by people who are actually looking for helpful advice, then you really are stupid. Read some of the silly kiddish stuff that's put on your screen.

I confess to having done so in my youth, but if I said it now, it would be entirely in jest.

It shows more about the person saying it than it does about the quality of the question. Even if it is at first sight a really stupid question, the questioner might have a valid reason for having asked it. Or they might just be completely mad, in which case, it's not particularly helpful to just mock.

Because everyone is entitled to their own opinion I guess. So just by asking a question you are opening yourself up to be judged on the type of question you ask. The other thing is alot of the so called questions in this forum are just opinions being stated in the form of a question.
Who knows?

Googlywotsit has my answer. I read many questions and KNOW they are from immature kids. I agree that many answers are from kids who do not know the answer, or an intelligent answer, they state the question is stupid because they don't understand.
