foresaking attachment may prevent pain; nothing can ever be permanent, so becoming attached to any person or thing is always certain to lead to disaster,
BUT,
we all know that things will come to an end, yet we allow ourselves to fall in love anyway; we could live in a hermetically sealed bubble, or wrap ourselves in cotton wool to avoid getting hurt, but in the process we would actually be foresaking LIFE.
As long as you aren't directly hurting someone, then I say you should take your happiness however and whenever you can get it; the joy and the pain all balances out in the end.

I think that you're misinterpreting what you've heard. Stoicism is what you're talking about, but you've got the wrong idea about it. Stoicism doesn't say that you should forsake attatchment. Stoicism says: Do not invest your emotions in things that re beyond your control. The philosopher Epictetus was a stoicist and he believed that you should only worry about things that you can control such as your: opinions, pursuits, desires, aversions, and whatever is your own doing. He believed that you should never worry about things that are out of your control such as: body, property, reputation(people will think what they want despite what you do), political office, and whatever isn't your own doing. Say your wife dies. He doesn't think that you should forsake marriage because of this. He thinks that you should just accept it and not worry about it since you can't control it. He says that this will take away all of your greif. I don't believe in this, but that is what Stoicism is and that's what Epictetus the stoicist believed.

It's obvious that attachments make people weaker, but I don't know that not having those attachments would bring you joy necessarily. Maybe not so many attachments.

For the first few years its bliss until you findout your 32 years old have no job and live with your mother. No joke i know a guy. Once you make that decision their is usually no turning back and it could ruin your hole world. The best thing is to probably let go of the attatchment as a feeling or craving for, but still injoy its presence. Like my guitar, its made of wood but it makes me happy. I could never give it up, my truck, my love for UPN.
Sheesh

No. There is much joy in being attached to another human being.
I certainly wouldn't be happy if I detached from my husband, children, and friends.

No, quite the opposite.
There can be no greater happiness & fulfillment than attaching yourself to someone & going on to have children & grandchildren of your own.
I think it would be a sad, lonely life with no attachents.
