Some folks aren't READING your question.

The Record for most MEDALS in one games belongs to Michael Phelps of the US who won 8 medals (6 gold, 2 bronze; 4 individual gold, 2, relay gold, one individual bronze and one relay bronze). This record is lessened a bit by the fact that Phelps swam in the preliminary heat but not the final of the 4x100 m medley relay, yet because of rule changes, is still awarded a medal.)

This tied the Record of 8 medals by Alexander Dityatin, a gymnast in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, when he won 3 golds, 4 silver and one bronze medal. But this was a boycotted games, so the impact of that feat was also lessened

Mark Spitz won 7 GOLD medals at the 1972 Munich Olympic games (5 individual and 2 relay medals), all in WR time, so I'd still say that Spitz's effort was still superior if no longer the "record"

For most medals in a single Olympics, I believe that record is held by Swimmer Mark Spitz with 7.

For most medals in total Olympics, I believe it is Carl Lewis who has 10.
