In moderation - I don't have a problem with kids playing games as long as it is not the only thing they do. My kids have a certain amount of game time a day mixed in with the rest of their activities. Games provide computer skills they will need, help with coordination, and help with frustration issues - however I do not want them zoning out all day on the game.

There is no logical reason to ban a child or teen from a game even if their parents don't see an educational reason for it.

Especially since electronic games are currently a huge topic amongst a lot of teens. It allows a person to share a common interest. Plus, it gives them a break from nonstop learning. If you couldn't do anything unless you were getting an educational experience out of it, the world would be utterly boring.

I however believe there is a line to draw. If you child is spending 15 hours a day playing Grand Theft Auto or Diablo 2 then they need a break. Not because they aren't learning, but because they need the social interaction

I think kids that play games are able to reason better. They are constantly having to figure things out. Hand eye coordination is probably the most obvious key. I do like the tech note. Ultimately, I like that games have become more than a waste of time for most parents. But also, today's parents were the first generation of gamers.

The amount of time that kids are spending is what I think is wrong with today's kids. There needs to be a balance. When a child is sacrificing socializing, exercising/sport, and study for games, it has become a problem. Other than the balance of time spent on games, I will encourage my kids to be the best gamers they can be.

Games are really good teachers! I'll say they let a gamer concentrate harder on a perticular objective and finally force them to complete them successfully. (Only if played fair! No cheats)

This helps them learn methodologies ( i meant planning & decision making inclusive of risk management). They'll concentrate on perticular things that make them think, decide and act. The practise of these things are really effective, though, getting addicted is another question.

But there are certain bads to be mentioned,
a) Lethagy takes its peak! obesse is another situation due to this. Less physical movement involved during gaming is the sole reason for this situation and the unlimited food and drink intake.
b) Violent games: These games are capable of totally educating children about violence, by forcing them to do such. Vandelism, Homicide and much more.
c) Addiction; Due to addiction the normal days proceedings could be at stake! Plan things, time them and get in to gaming.
d) Eye related issues: Lazy eye is one situation caused due to gaming. Due to these risks involved warning messages are typed on the games consoles, relating advices of taking 15 minute breaks for every hour you game.
e) Aches in joints: The fingers, wrists and elbows along with the shoulder could be enlisted under joints that result in aches due to long-hour gaming. This should be treated, or else could get really worse. i.e rhyumatism.

Advice: Always offer games that are really suitable for their ages. Check the ratings on-line or simply the cover that the game is bundled.

Good Luck!

Playing games is part of what defines being a kid if you ask me.
So no, it's not wrong.
They may or may not be learning something. If they play scrabble, they may be. If they are playing 'who can hock the farthest luggi" then maybe not.
If you're talkin video games, there are lots of hand-eye coordination and multitasking that goes on. The military uses video game-like applications to simulate warfare.

Game on!

Is it wrong for kids to play games? It wont make them stupid. Endless hours in front of a tv might make them fat.
