Orchids are tough to care for.
Keep it in a clear plant pot, so you can see if it gets dry.
When the roots and soil look dry, water the orchid with plenty of water. What you really want to do is to water it, while rinsing off any mineral residue on the roots and in the soil. Orchids hate mineral residue.
Keep it near an indirect source of light. If the leaves are too light green, it's too much light.
Try to make sure the plant doesn't get too hot or too cold. you can touch a leaf to see. It should be cool, but not cold.
After the flowers die (this will take a few months), it takes several months (4-6) till the orchid blooms again. Keep up all the care that I listed above, and it should bloom again.

Orchids don't like a really rich soil so they grow best in a mix of soil and bark chips. Not too much water, a little more often is better than to soak the soil. If possible put outside for a 'cold snap' period once a year. When the flowers fall - don't cut the stem right back - sometimes it shoots and flowers again! Orchids are gorgeous!!!

Also, do not cut off the thick, leaveless branches that grow from an orchid. They are not dead branches but help the orchid to get air and water.

A good questiion. Orchids can be prima donnas.
First, raise your own self esteem. It IS possible to raise the most gorgeous, healthy orchids.
Second, talk to your orchids. Tell them they are beautiful!
Third, give them plenty of light - but not direct sunlight.
Fourth - do not overwater, but give humidity. The bathroom is often the best place, bright light, filtred through opaque glass, lots of steam. (Unless you have a greenhouse, of course)
Fifth - go to a good garden centre and buy a specialist orchid feed.
Hope this helps!!
