i'm a guitar instructor, i teach about 40 students a week. if you have any questions, dont be afraid to ask. the first thing i'd recommend is figuring out what guitar is right for you. the 3 big things to learn about are the type of neck/neckjoint on the guitar, the type of pickups (single coils, or humbuckers) and the type of bridge on the guitar (fixed bridge or tremolo system). after that, its just a matter of making sure the instrument is comfortable for you.

anytime anyone tells you that you need to play a certain type of guitar/amp, or use certain strings or picks or whatever..... well, thats the same as me telling you that you should only wear red shirts, and only eat tacos, never wear blue shirts or eat ice cream. just because something is good for me, doesnt mean its right for you.

Playing the guitar is a great hobby. I play the guitar and six other instruments.

I would recommend learning on an acoustic guitar BEFORE going out and getting an electric. You have to learn the fundamentals before getting fancy.

Learning the guitar takes practice. The beauty of the guitar is that everything follows a pattern. The chord relationships, the scales and the various keys.

Here is what I would do if I were you.
1. Get a good instruction book or teacher.
2. Learn the chords first. You can't solo without knowing what the basics are first
3. Learn the relationship between chords and musical keys. Again, learn the fundamentals.
4. After you are proficient with 2 and 3, start learning the location of the notes in relation to the key you are playing in.
5. Learn the scales for the straight key.
6. Learn the more exotic scales and modes.
7. Practice, practice, practice.

I would choose an artist that you like and listen to the baselines. you can use that to figure out the key and chords once you get more proficient. Listening to popular music gives you some ideas on song structure within keys.

There is always more, but this should get you going.

If you want to save some money, you could teach yourself. I learned how to read guitar music by purchasing "Mel Bay's Complete Method for Modern Guitar." You could also purchase a book that will help you with chord formations. Once you learn basic barre chords, you should be able to play along with many of the songs you hear on the radio today. When I was younger, I played along to Green Day tunes because they are simple and only employ simple power chords.

I would advise you to learn on an accoustic, because then playing an electric will be no sweat. Get some learning books, learn your chords and scales and go from there. It just takes LOTS of practice, but it's worth it.

Depends on the type of guitar player you want to be. If you want to shred, first you need to listen to shredders and learn scales. If you want to be able to play hit songs then listen to hit songs and learn chords. And Practice! Even if you get frustrated and it seems like its not working stick with it. Perseverance and lots of listening. Good Luck!

Here is how to understand the tabs--> http://www.free-tabs.com/guitar_tip2.php

Just press "lessons" at the top of the home page to learn more. :)

Buy a guitar, get a teacher, pay for lessons, practice. And spell guitar right.

Unless there's a new instrument called the gut-iar that I haven't heard about.

i bought a few books from a music store. make sure you get one with a cd that you can listen along to. it would be best if they have a dvd so you can watch.

you can also download some guitar tab from the internet and try to play along to some of your favorite songs... but this wont help you read music.

you have first to go for someone to show you the basics, the right handling and how to use your fingers, scaling, how to read note and tabs. then you can go on self training, using the internet but u cant train by yourself if you are going to begin from scratch .. you may learn wrong styles ,then you will never be able to correct them
good luck :)
