I wouldn't recommend moving a refrigerator on it's side. The engineers that designed the refrigerator designed it to withstand being moved in a truck in an upright position. If you move it in a horizontal position something might jar or vibrate loose. That's why packaging engineers like myself put signs on the boxes that say "THIS END UP", with an arrow pointing up. Just laying it on its side might not do any damage, but I definitely wouldn't lay it on its side during transit. Also remember to let your refrigerator sit for an hour or two before plugging it in. I've heard that plugging it in right after it's been moved can damage it.

you can lay it on its side but you have to let it stand about 12 hours before plugging in i have done it on more than one occasion

It is not a good idea because there is freeon (not sure of spelling) that could leak out and then the fridge might not work.
