It is legal as long as you don't infringe on copyrights (i.e. downloading movies, songs, books, etc.)

Read the disclaimer on the website.

LimeWire itself is not illegal, but it depends on what you are downloading. LimeWire is created & runs in Java. Java is the most difficult software/program to track & trace. When the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) releases more users of illegal pirating who are being sued, the least are from LimeWire, but the RIAA can tell if you downloaded copyrighted or non-copyrighted material of major labeled record industries. Although it doesn’t have to be a major record label, it can be Indie, but a “no record labeled” artists wont care because they’re not getting paid for it. If you also use Apple iTunes or MSN Music, the RIAA can tell if you downloaded it form there. How do they do this? If you want a multiple page report I'll do that, but for now I'll keep it as this. Also, people who say LimeWire is terrible or it sucks & you should use BitTorrent don't know what they are talking about. BitTorrent is excruciatingly slow as hell if you're using dial-up like me. An average download audio file (2,000 - 3,000 KB) would take 1:30 to complete, with LimeWire, they try to make their software download as fast as it can with the connection you're using. An audio file (2,000 - 3,000 KB) = -30 minutes for dial-up if you're not using anything else. I was a bit surprised when BT finally went corporate.

Miggety is correct.

The program isn't illegal. Transferring files isn't illegal If I post a bunch of my personal files you can legally download them.

You can't legally offer for download or download from another any copyrighted material like copyrighted music or copyrighted movies.

If you do and you are caught the RIAA has been charging $3000 to agree to drop the charges.

I use Limewire to transfer large picture files and since I own the pictures I can legally do that.

It amazes me how many people think Limewire has spy ware, viruses and is illegal.

These people just don't know Limewire or the legality of peer to peer transfers.

No, Limewire is legal file sharing software. However, illegal content can be shared using Limewire. Limewire takes no responsibility for how their software is used, they simply provide the ability to share what is expected to be legal material.

The program, and P2P itself is not illegal. If you live in the United States and you choose to download copyrighted software, or music and movies that are not legally freely distributed, then those Activities and possesion of them are what is illegal.

If you download material that is copywrite protected it is illegal. The software itself is not illegal. It's what you do with it that could be illegal.
