Absolutely NOT!!! Marriage is hard work and it requires a lot of self disciplin and control. Things as simple as putting the toilet paper roll the wrong way on the holder or squeezing the toothpaste tube the wrong way can cause divorce. It's not easy, it takes patience and learning everyday something new about your spouse. It's a true commitment to what you want in life.
It's probably the biggest commitment anyone can make.
I think that is why marriage has become such a great past time. Some people just want to see how many they can have in a lifetime. I was thrilled to hear that in order to get a divorce anymore most judges are making the couples do counseling and try reconciliation. The courts were full of divorces that just didn't need to be there. If the marriage got too hard, people bailed out. WELL, marriage is hard work. But the rewards are the best, you have a life partner, children who are stable and have goals to make their marriage work at any cost and friends who have helped you along the way are now the closer than family, you get to learn something about another person everyday and learn from them and the memories....oh WOW they are the best!
Piece of paper I think NOT!

No, it's a marriage license that is the piece of paper, not a marriage.
Marriage is very complicated, it is not just two people sleeping together, sharing the same last name, or having a joint checking account.
It is about commitment, and what it takes to remain committed, which most people today just do not get.
Obviously, or you would not have asked this question.
People today look at marriage like some sort of "crap shoot". They take the dice, roll them a few times, come up winners, so they figure, what the hell, may as well get married. Then the first sign of trouble, DIVORCE. And we question why we have so many irresponsible, and unaccountable adults running around making babies that end up in foster care, on the streets, or in jails.
Mann...
Marriage is not just a PIECE OF PAPER.
Maintain that perspective and we can start taking bets on how many divorces you will have by the time you die.

Some marriages are "just a piece of paper" but this isn't how it should be. God created us in pairs. Yes we can handle the world on our own....many people do. But when you have a spouse that you have a mutual love and respect for, not only do you have a best friend, supporter and psychologist, you also have the means of creating a family. Family is one of the two things that truly belong to us. The other one is life.

If that's the case then why even bother getting married or going through all the pomp and circumstance? Marriage is supposed to be a union between a man and a woman (I'm not getting into a gay marriage debate), who are committed to being with each other for the rest of their lives through good times and bad.
However, there are far too many people who don't take marriage seriously who put more effort into the wedding ceremony than they do their marriage.

I have found out that those who say marriage is just a piece of paper, are the ones still living without that paper and too afraid bluff about the lack of importance of something when you have very carefully seperated yourself from it.
I tell those people, if marriage really doesn't matter and is "just a piece of paper", then just do it and see.

I was amazed at the lack of 'religious nutter ' type answers to this question I had expected loads!!
I agree it is really just a piece of paper which at least in the UK gives the female just as much 'right' as any church wedding would.
The amount of commitment put into this 'contract' depends on both partners and any off spring must be taken into account!
But at the end of the day yes, it's just a piece of (legal) paper.

No. I don't agree. Marriage is the best thing that can happen between a man and a woman, of matured minds. It offers companionship. You have somebody to fall back on, to look forward to seeing at the end of a stressful working day, to watch TV with, to dine with, to share views with, and even to argue with.
A stable marriage means having children that do not turn out as social misfits in future. Marriage gives one respect.

Many couples who decide never to get married are in much more stable, committed relationships than other who have been married for years.
So my answer is yes, it is just a piece of paper. The real committment comes from within & not from a legally binding contract.

its like saying 'life is just a word'. its true that in strictly materialistic sense when we are talking about physical things marrige is not more than a written agreement deviced by society for its civilized working and well being. but apart from taking marrige as an imposition which you have to adhere to because the society says so its roots are deeper into our animal insticts. we need a partner because we have sexual, emotional, social needs. we being animals require to respond to nature's call and being civilized animals go beyond them and fall in love, commit and get emotionally attached. its not always that you are in a relationship by choice but then also there are certain other dependancies and forces acting.
if you consider all of these then i don't think you will take marrige as just a piece of paper.
