The TX executives are not smart enough to market certain shows properly or to program them in an appropriate time slot.
NBC Failed on bringing Coupling to America but actually learned from their mistakes and stayed true to The Office.
Mystery Science Theater was a smart show that was mishandled late in it's run.
I think the general public is underestimated and the networks continue to put out mediocre crap failing to see that when HBO or Showtime or another cable network chooses to put out a smarter quality show it can be a hit.

Good question. If a show is good and thought-provoking, you can bet it will be sacked. One of the best shows I've seen in a long time was Dead Like Me and I can't believe they cancelled it! Freaks and Geeks was another wonderful show that died before its time. I guess the majority of the American population would rather watch a bigot like that asshole on War at Home or Pam Anderson barely fitting into a dress on Stacked. It is inconcievable to me why this worthless junk is allowed to stay on.

It's the lowest common denominater. What appeals to the masses will survive.
The idea is that people want to be entertained, not have their thoughts provoked.
I had friends who could not keep up with West Wing, or Arrested Development. I'd be cracking up, and they'd be lost. "They talk too fast, and I don't understand what they're saying."
Look at Desperate Housewives even. The first show, especially where the Felicity Huffman character finds herself walking into the pool to get her bratty kids because her husband is AWOL again, was brilliant. The first year was great.
It became a hit, and last year it was dumbed down. Bree and a sex addict? What?

Yep you should add LOVE MONKEY in there as well, and THE BOOK OF DANIEL (that was offensivwe to the nutcases on the relgious right so thats why that got shelfed). Often they are never given enough of a chance. It sucks that the network bosses are always so egare to can shows.

i absolutely agree with you, but i don't think it's the shows that are too smart... people aren't stupid, they're just too lazy to think about the shows... the aaron sorkin masterpiece "sports night" was a perfect example... awesome show... witty and funny with a perfect combination of comedy and drama... but it only lasted 2 seasons... crazy huh?
